2 Live Crew on Stage w/ Porn Stars "Pinky" & "Cherokee" Just for the kids!!

When I saw this I thought about the fact that when the song in this clip "ORIGINALLY" dropped, it was THE most controversial song in HIP HOP HISTORY. 2 Live Crew got banned in EVERY record Store. Their record label was sued by Time Warner and anybody else relevant at the time. 2 Live crew got arrested EVERYTIME they performed songs from this album. The situation actually made it ALL the way too Supreme Court!! After months and months of hearings, 2 Live Crew won a victory for Hip Hop because the Judges ruled that they were protected under "Freedom of Speech."
Hip Hop went crazy!! We won in the Supreme Court!!! A a matter of fact that little "parental advisory" sticker you see on CD's now... It came from this case. It didn't exist before this 2 Live Crew song. But the Court ruled that you can make any music you like, however obscene or explicit, as long as you put the parental advisory sticker on the outside of the product. Hip Hop Wins!

Then I got to thinking, did we REALLY win? Because immediately after that, the "Parental Advisory" sticker became a "badge of honor" rather than a warning. It actually told the kids WHAT to buy and you were considered WACK if your tape or CD didn't have one. Then EVERYBODY and their brother started putting out the most EXPLICIT music you could think of. It was almost as if rappers saw how much publicity 2 Live Crew got so they tried to outdo what they did and be raunchier and nastier. What ended up happening is part of our music died because more rappers were going for Impact over substance. Out of every 30 releases, 5 were good, the rest were just ridiculous attempts at getting attention from the media. Now don't get me wrong, there were a few successful attempts that used this formula to win. N.W.A for example, "100 Miles & Running" & "Efilzaggin", Lil Kim "Hardcore" and even Trina came along and got some sales from this approach. But overall it actually hurt the game more than it helped. Which brings me to the ACTUAL point of this post.
As I sat here and listened to one of the most Controversial Songs Hip Hop has ever seen, Considered the filthiest, degrading, disgusting song EVER, yes they said that!
I couldn't help but realize one thing.
It sounds tame compared to what they play on the RADIO now. It's actually not as raunchy as a Plies record or any of the other people that we have nowadays that just put it out there. So as a society, we have actually been programmed to accept filth as "the norm". Now I'm not saying filth = Wack, even though most of the music today is WACK. I'm just saying that Nasty, Filthy lyrics have become standard. And not only music, Movies, TV, Cartoons (yes they go there too nowadays, sneak up on your kids, you'll see!) and every other form of media. So I pose one question.

You are expecting what exactly from our kids? (*said in a sarcastic tone)

  1. Wow I learned something new from this post I didn't know about the history behind the "Parental Advisory" sticker but, it really is crazy how now day you can't turn on the TV, or the radio or go anywhere without exposing your children to all the sex that's going on so that's why we as parents have to make sure you talk to your kids about all the things that's going on in the world before the TV, the streets, and the radio stations do it for us. GREAT POST FLYBOY I love the way you think

  2. This generation has exposure to so many things from so many types of music, videos, video games, computers and the list goes on.Am not big on the radio because for one everything sounds the same and when you do get words it's about sex, money, drugs and so on. Kids have these songs as ring-tones and can even sing them in their sleep. The generation that is now coming up are the people who can change things but if all they hear is the same old thing they will keep it going. You have to educate your children about things that go on because if not they fall victim to their friends and society. This is something we were just talking about at work and it's good to see the topic here as well.
